Many types of Lithium-ion Batteries

What You Need to Know About Lithium Batteries

If you’ve ever moved in a shipping container or loaded one up, you might know there are a lot of rules to follow, especially when it comes to lithium batteries. These batteries are everywhere: in your phone, laptop, camera, power tools, and even your e-bike or e-scooter. When it comes to container relocations in New Zealand and Internationally, there are some important safety rules you need to know.

Why Are There Special Rules for Lithium Batteries?

They can BLOW UP! Lithium batteries are powerful and convenient, but they can be dangerous if they’re damaged, defective, or not packed properly. That’s why shipping lines and transport companies have strict rules to keep everyone safe, whether you’re moving by road, Kiwirail, or sea.

The Basics: What’s Allowed and What’s Not

Lithium batteries are only allowed in our containers if you follow these rules:

• Only brand new batteries: Batteries must be new and in their original packaging. Used or opened batteries are not allowed and must travel with you

• Protect them from damage: Make sure new batteries are packed well so they can’t get damaged, short-circuited, or accidentally turned on during the move

• No leaks or defects: Damaged, defective, or leaking batteries are strictly prohibited.

• Stick to the rules: These rules apply to all types of transport—road, rail, and sea. Shipping lines check carefully, and there are no exceptions

What Happens If You Don’t Follow the Rules?

If your lithium-ion batteries don’t meet these requirements, they can’t go in the container. It’s that simple. Shipping companies will refuse to move them, and you will have to pay extra costs to sort things out. You might even be prosecuted.
