One Month Before Moving (or earlier)
Moving
- Finalise details with your moving company (e.g. pay deposit, agree services, etc).
General
- De-clutter your house and get rid of anything you don't want to spend money moving. Hold a garage sale, list items on online auction sites, make up bags for charity shops, donation or recyling bins
- Sell any large-ticket items (car, boat, trailers, etc)
- Give notice to your landlord
- Advise your children's schools and health practitioners (doctor, dentist, etc).
Paperwork
If you are moving overseas, make sure your passports, vias, tickets for travel and accommodation plans are finalised
File copies of birth and marriage certificates, get school, medical and dental records
Cancel subscriptions for postal circulars
Cancel or transfer insurance policies (life, house and car)
Notify bank/s, credit card companies, electoral office, IRD, loal council, government departments, solicitor, church, social groups and clubs
Get an international driving permit (if needed)
Arrange travel insurance
Obtain work references, details of pension contributions/plans
Back up computer files
Arrange for care or transportation of pets and livestock.

Two Weeks Before Moving
Moving
- Confirm your removal date with Container Relocations
- Complete packing non-essential items.
General
- Contact utility and service companies to cancel services (electricity, gas, council, cable TV, rental companies, milk deliveries, window cleaners)
- Arrange connections at your new home if possible
- Dispose of prohibited items (items than cannot be shipped or transported)
- Pick up any dry cleaning
- Return library items on loan (books, toys, DVDs)
- Order foreign currency
- Clean all items (especially outdoor items) to meet quarantine requirements
- Have a farewell party!
Paperwork
Chase up any outstanding paperwork
Re-direct your mail and send out the post office's complimentary change of address cards.

The Day Before Moving
Moving
- Give everyone a job or activity for the next day and an idea of what to expect.
General
- Confirm final meter readings with utility companies
- Dispose of flammables, unwanted medicines, toiletries, food
- Pick up foreign currency
- Give the garden and plants a good watering
- Disconnect all applicances
- Clean as much of the house as posssible
- Remove pictures, wall hangings, curtains, blinds and lightshades.

On Moving Day
Moving
- Have a designated person on hand to ensure removals are completed and house left empty
- Final clean house if required
- Have your inventory ready and sign it off with Container Relocations.
General
Have a good breakfast (don't create dirty dishes, use disposable picnic items)
Unplug the phone and pack it
Keep all travel documents and travel supplies to hand (first aid kid, entertainment, refreshments, etc).
